Case Closed Volumes

Case Closed was originally released by FUNimation in individual volume discs. These DVDs were released as “uncut” versions only, and feature both the American and Japanese video/audio depending on which language is selected in the setup menu. Branded as “cases” rather than “seasons,” these volumes were released completely out-of-order, confusing casual and hardcore fans alike. “Case” four was released first, followed by “case” five, with “cases” one, two, and three in last place. These individual volumes contain anywhere from three to nine episodes each, and are now out-of-print.

Those who read carefully will notice that some of the episodes on these volumes are presented out-of-order. FUNimation confirmed that this was done to group multi-episode mysteries together to avoid cliffhangers from disc to disc. While that may seem strange, the DVD releases differ from the broadcast order even in Japan.

Individual Volumes – “Case One” Episodes

“Case” one is divided into four individual volumes, with a fifth bonus disc. This “bonus” disc is the first version of volume 1.1 (the very first Case Closed DVD ever released). It contains the first four episodes and was packaged inside an artbox alongside the first volume of “case” four. This volume has long since been discontinued and replaced with the second version of volume 1.1, listed right below it. The remaining volumes comprise the rest of “case” one.

Individual Volumes – “Case Four” Episodes

All volumes in “cases” four and five contain alternate angles, which means that two different video tracks are included on each disc. If the English version is selected at the setup menu, the video plays with English title cards, English character name boxes, and FUNimation cast/crew ending credits. If the Japanese version is selected, the unedited Japanese footage plays with the original Japanese title cards and name boxes. These alternate angles do not appear on the “case” one, two, or three DVD releases.

These discs also contain bonus features. A “Crack The Case” game is included on the “case” four and five DVDs that unlock FUNimation voice actor bloopers once completed. The game requires viewers to watch the episodes on the disc and then play a trivia game to collect a secret code. That code could then be entered into the menu to access the voice actor bloopers. That’s a quite a bit of effort to go through just to watch a few minutes of flubs, so the codes for each volume are written below. “Cases” one, two, and three do not feature this game.
