I can’t really think of much to say about this filler episode. Amnesia has always been a common concept for crafting mystery stories, so I do like that this subject was covered, and I think it was handled very well. One of my favorite animation directors worked on this episode, so at the very least, the whole thing looks fantastic. The only oddity I can think of is how on Earth three hours could pass since a bus wreck and have absolutely NO progress at all being made on cleaning it up. When we arrive at the site of the wreck three hours after it happened, the vehicles are still in the middle of the road and the tow truck seems to only just now be arriving. Baker City must have some pretty incompetent repairmen.
There isn’t much to say about the dub either. There’s one change that sounds more important than it really is, and the other one doesn’t really matter at all since they get the same point across despite the fact that it was rewritten.
Name Conversion Guide
Hitoshi Yuda = Harrison Yancy
Maya Tachibana = Maya Reardon
Maya actually keeps her original first name, which is something that hasn’t happened in a long time. Musashino Prison is just referred to as the “state prison.” The Yokoyama General Hospital isn’t referred to as anything else but “the hospital.”
In the hotel room, Kogorō states that the address and phone number that the hotel had on record for Maya were both fake. This information is left out of the dub. Instead, Richard just talks about how they have no more leads to go off of.
Hanna-Barbera sound effects are hilarious.
In the epilogue when Conan lies to Kogorō about how Maya said he was such a great detective, Kogorō responded by saying that because of his deduction skills, he’ll definitely win the next time he gambles at the horse races. In the dub, Richard laments over the fact that Maya didn’t realize his greatness sooner.
These two changes are both for what are basically throwaway lines, so their alteration doesn’t really affect the mystery at all. Everything else was perfectly intact. See you next time!
